Let’s face it—finding good talent is tough. As the unemployment rate continues at its lowest point in 20 years, employers are seeing heavy competition as they seek qualified professionals for their in-house creative positions.

This means you need to put your best foot forward based on a realistic understanding of what talent are looking for in terms of company culture, great benefits, opportunities for advancement and a competitive compensation plan. Go into your talent search being sure that what you’re offering is competitive. Frankly, in today’s talent-driven market, if you want good talent for your business, you’ll need to work for it.

Here’s what candidates are seeking:

  • Better salary
  • Great company culture
  • Bigger benefits packages
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Perks
  • Speedy hiring process

Here’s what employers can do:

  • Compensation needs to be competitive to attract top talent. Market research assists you to compare your organization’s salary levels to what other companies offer for the same positions/functions in your locale(s). Should you make salary adjustments to gain an advantage? Or offer additional incentives—stipends for professional development, transportation reimbursement, pizza Fridays, etc.?
  • Objectively assess your current work culture and make any needed changes. What are your values, mission, ethics and goals? Is your work culture modern and would it appeal to new employees?
  • Focus on a positive candidate experience. You want candidates to feel welcome and respected through every aspect of the hiring process.
  • Look at your retention strategies and advancement opportunities. What is your turnover rate? How many of your staff have you moved into higher positions? Rethink what’s required today to keep employees satisfied, engaged and enthusiastic.
  • Appraise the duration of your end-to-end hiring process. How quickly can you provide potential hires a final decision? Don’t spend weeks or months deciding on great talent, hoping someone better will apply. Candidates may soon tire of waiting on you and take another offer.
  • Proactively build a candidate pool when you think a position will soon be available. If you’re having trouble finding good talent, it’s more efficient and cost effective to let an outside resource do the work for you.

In today’s talent-driven hiring environment, difficulty filling positions can be a common experience. This is the time to seek some expert advice from a staffing agency. Ask a business development manager or recruiter for their perspective of the market. They can offer valuable advice on how you can make your hiring process competitive, and your company an attractive place to land.
