What recruiters look for in potential PR hires

2011-12-13

Public relations (PR) is one of the fastest-growing job fields today. The explosion of online media in our everyday lives has added an increased need for communicative professionals to monitor and generate a positive reputation for clients. Especially when acting as a PR representative for a high-profile figure, managing Twitter and Facebook accounts means being able to spread positive information about clients, but these can also act as a major risk factor if mismanaged.

If you're looking to enter the field of PR, it is important to understand what a recruiter looks for in a potential hire. There are obvious skills one would need to display in order to stand out amongst a crowd.

In a nutshell, good PR improves the client's visibility and reputation through the use of various media. Although other tasks like coordinating events, meetings and educational programs can fall into your basket of job requirements, most PR representatives deal directly with the media in order to reach the desired target audience.

A recruiter looks for specific character attributes to initially start the interview process. Many recruiters demand that potential hires have strong communication skills. Although there are some PR opportunities for the more introverted type, it is good practice to understand that in most cases you'll be required to articulate in both written and spoken word to small, and in some cases, large groups of people.

Another desired characteristic is the ability to relate to a variety of people. The best PR representatives can spark up easy conversations with almost anyone, and they need to emit a sense of understanding while dealing with different types of people. A confident, assertive person makes the best specialist because he quickly learns to establish an open-door policy when it comes to communication. A client will want to be constantly in the loop, and a PR representative will need to be able to hold multiple conversations to keep the necessary parties informed.

At the educational level, a PR professional can have a variety of degrees ranging from an English to a broader communications degree. A potential candidate will have to be well-versed in writing and communication skills while also understanding the mass media and how it works. Those who do not understand the media won't pose much value to their clients.
