Using social media to recruit new talent

2011-12-14

The complex job market is a competitive field for employers and employees. Both parties are struggling to adapt to the rapidly evolving social media world and attempting to find ways to recruit, self-promote and brand themselves as innovative and engaging entities.

For employees, it is imperative to have a well-maintained social media presence. If not solely for the purpose of displaying technological capabilities in relation to creative work, employees are diving head first into the major social media leaders LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. However, as the platforms continue to gain new users, they are becoming vital advertising tools for people to promote their personal brands and skills.

Employers are at an important stage in determining the future of their continued success. They are forced to adapt to social media trends, which can be much harder for a large organization than for an individual. Maintaining an engaging personality requires new experts in the field, but if done correctly, can produce a positive public image and even be used to recruit new talent.

In the past, businesses traditionally relied upon job boards and contacts to find new talent and fill open positions, but today, the majority of corporations are using social media to aid their recruiting process. By building connections to people through organizations and established recruiting services, companies are able to form bonds with co-workers, current clients, local entrepreneurs and friends through services like LinkedIn and Facebook.

In order to successfully utilize social media as part of any recruiting strategy, it is important to understand how candidates use social media to find jobs. Many job seekers initially use the platforms to educate themselves about companies they are interested in. Whether that be researching clients and current products or simply looking through photo albums to get an idea of what the atmosphere is like in the office, job seekers are interested in more than just the pay and benefits.

For an employer, it can be hard to figure out how to attract and engage top talent. Many organizations outsource this task as the field is evolving and they are not fully aware of how to successfully market themselves to candidates on social media sites. This type of head hunting has been deemed social recruiting across many industries. It's about engaging with users and using social media tools to attract talent.

Recruiting the top talent is still the way to get ahead in any market, but learning more efficient ways to go about this process has helped businesses in every industry find new employees.
