Usability impacts web success

2012-02-14

During the recession, many companies scaled back their spending on marketing campaigns. With an uptick in hiring there has been a resurgence in design marketing, employers have begun to hire individuals to fill graphic web design jobs. Each year, new trends emerge and alter the way websites operate. Designers are expected to adhere to these trends, while remaining unique in their practices. As businesses begin to heavily monitor their web presence, more will be expected of graphic and web designers.

In 2012, there will be an emphasis on design that grabs readers. Web designers are steering clear of pages that require multiple clicks to bring users to sections of a website. An important element in new design is ease of use. One-page layouts will challenge graphic and web designers to edit out unnecessary text that exists on many pages today. They will need to find new and creative ways to keep design appealing while implementing a minimal approach. These preliminary trends will affect how many designers approach future projects.

In combination with one-page layouts, companies are expected to start using larger logos and headers on their websites. These engaging graphics will serve the purpose of a splash page, but instead of forcing a user to click to navigate to the next page, they will just scroll down to the content. This will also become useful in designing web pages that are compatible on mobile browsers. The smartphone and tablet era is upon us, and designers as well as companies are scrambling to convert their web pages to a more accessible design for remote users.

Finding web and graphic design jobs will be easier than in the past. Cities around the country are establishing themselves as creative hubs. Job seekers should look beyond the traditional settings, such as New York City and Los Angeles, in favor of smaller markets. Cities such as Austin, Texas, and Newark, New Jersey, have booming industries as both are located near centralized markets, reports Artbistro.

Understanding trends and how to apply functionality to the effort is the most successful way for a designer to develop an effective web page. Companies will look for individuals who encompass creative characteristics, as well as genuine business savvy.
