Twitter flubs create new PR jobs

2012-02-14

It would be foolish to deny the importance of social media. It has changed the way businesses interact with the public and, for consumers, it is a way to discuss any given topic aloud. While it is true that social media can get in the way, in most cases, the business is at fault.

Organizations that focus too much on having an appealing reputation on Twitter prevent more important tasks from receiving the proper amount of attention. There is a need for balance and it can be hard to achieve. However, perhaps one area that outlets, such as Twitter, have proven the most problematic is when the service is being used by a public figure.

Politicians, celebrities and other public figures use Twitter to manage personal brands. It is an easy way to interact with the public, offering innovative ways to spread messages or content. However, one simple mistake on a social media outlet can leave a long-lasting impression, which may not always be a good thing.

To combat poorly managed social media accounts, many public figures have hired professionals for assistance. The need for workers to help manage public social media sites has created public relations jobs and copywriting jobs within the industry. The communication tool has grown so rapidly it has spawned a unique new industry, where many people are needed in order to effectively manage an online presence.

Social media is a way for consumers to learn more about a company or person. The transparency provided helps create a new sense of understanding about a brand or image. It can help make a CEO or celebrity seem more human, one with feelings and a heart. In the past, public figures had to use interviews and meet-and-greets to achieve even a fraction of the success seen from social media. Today, a public official can receive national attention by publishing 140 characters of text with a few taps on a smartphone. It has revolutionized the way everyone communications, as well as how we all view public figures.

On any given day it is possible to hit the internet and find a public figure who has mismanaged a social media account, and is now suffering the consequences. It happens more often than one may realize, and that is where public relations jobs are needed: to deflect the negative attention attracted by a mistaken Tweet, either of text or of graphical importance. As the world continues to use social media, more jobs will be needed to effectively manage it.
