The right font can make an impact

2012-02-14

A business that wants to garner attention in the consumer market needs to brand itself accordingly. An image that may work for a financial organization would not provide the same impact for creative companies, such as advertising agencies, PR firms and graphic design houses.

The font that a business uses for its copy can have a direct effect on potential customers. Organizations across all fields employ professionals to fill graphic design jobs in order to create a font that complements the characteristics of the business. However, without some direction, graphic designers may be left to fend for themselves.

Business owners who want to be a part of the creative process may want to learn a bit about typography and the power it holds. The font that a business uses on its advertisements, internal memos and website can say something about the brand. The chosen font should match the personality of the organization, as if it is an extension of the brand itself. Times New Roman, for example, is a rigid font that works well for strict financial services. The font is serious by nature.

A business that decides to use a common font may not get the attention it deserves. If distributed content looks similar to printouts that consumers see on a daily basis, the content may be disregarded altogether. Businesses should employ graphic designers to create new fonts that are attention grabbing by nature, but also easy to read.

When deciding on the font that will represent a brand, business owners should look to summarize the type of business he or she runs. Write down a few choice adjectives that describe the service and look for a font that embodies the same characteristics. Comic Sans MS, for example, is a creative font that can evoke childish emotions. Organizations that design services or products geared toward children may want to develop a font that evokes the same emotions as Comic Sans MS to pull a campaign together.

Fonts can appeal to different target audiences. Similarly to how Comic Sans MS has the potential to complement a business that is selling to children, the fonts can also help make a business look more assertive. Helvetica, for instance, commands attention. It has the perfect negative space to text ratio that resonates in the minds of consumers and helps to create an authoritative voice in any promotional copy. Businesses may want to consider how simple lettering can also have positive qualities.

The right font can help extend the personality of a business. Whether used on promotional content or in-house branding, the font can become just as much a part of a business as the products it sells.
