The gaming industry is going social

2012-02-14

Video games continue to impress consumers with their improved graphics and more developed plots. People can't wait to get their hands on the latest releases and often wait in long lines to be the first to experience the new products. However, simultaneously to the rest of the world, the video game industry has grown more social and overwhelming. This realization has forced many video game production companies to create social media jobs to help develop games that are appealing and interactive. Project managers assigned to create socially-inspired games can bring professionals who hold animation jobs together with savvy marketers to achieve success.

Businesses that develop and distribute unique games should adhere to trends similar to other creative organizations. Consumers have an affinity for communicating with one another about the latest games, trading tips and networking with individuals who have similar tastes. Organizations that make this an easier task for their fans may be able to garner more than a friendly reputation, but valuable consumer insight to use in future marketing, promotions and game development.

Xbox Live, for example, is an online component to the popular gaming system. But what makes it all the more attractive to consumers is its social capabilities. Users create personal accounts on the system and play other people from around the world. The feature also allows people to log into their Facebook or Twitter accounts, purchase other games from the cloud and rent movies. In many ways, certain demographics don't need any other form of entertainment because the social aspects of Xbox live provide it all.

Businesses can encourage their fans to discuss tips and their favorite parts about the games they play on social media platforms. While social media sites would provide these fans a place to meet and talk about their hobbies, it also becomes a valuable source for businesses. Developers could pay close attention to how their key demographics interact online, compiling information to use in further marketing. In addition, users who interact on sites like Facebook could easily be persuaded into offering up their email addresses or other contact information. Utilizing that data for direct mail marketing or email marketing could help boost sales in the future.

Almost every industry is discovering the benefits of using social media to compile consumer information. Integrating more interactive components into gaming can be attractive to consumers, while also being an invaluable marketing ploy for business professionals. When it comes to appeasing consumer demand, using social media to improve gaming quality may just be an important new addition to a critical niche market.
