Philanthropy can help an unemployed individual get back on track

2011-12-14

Being stuck between jobs and struggling to find work can take a toll on an individual's mental state. While the world continues to transition from localized markets to a global economy, in some industries, there fails to be a lot of job openings or outlets for people to focus their energy on.

One problem that people have when they are out of work is figuring out the next step. The "what's next?" factor can be more difficult to navigate than many would expect. The skills they have learned throughout their career are still fresh in their minds, but without a way to exercise them, they'll grow stale and outdated. Figuring out a way to remain in the corporate world without a paying job could create new opportunities for employment in the future.

A great outlet to explore while out of work is philanthropy or volunteer work. Although non-profits have a very different outlook on making money, they require a very business-centric staff that can develop innovative new marketing techniques and programs.

Looking at philanthropic work as solely a way to feel good about oneself is limiting the networking possibilities that are inherently part of any non-profit. Volunteering and publicity are ways that businesses use their professional skills to improve their public image. Therefore, many charitable events are sponsored by big businesses and often have high-profile employees working at the receptions. Philanthropic gatherings are a great way for a company to promote its corporate brand and network with clients, which leaves the door open for individuals and clients to promote their personal brands to companies.

Understanding that employers are directly linked to many charities can help an individual find new ways to network and get involved in a company. Having an interest in a few businesses and becoming involved in charities they sponsor can help develop new relationships with people who can help you get employed. Furthermore, volunteering at philanthropic events improves one's personal brand. Having the ability to list several organizations that you are actively part of can improve your image and grow your list of skills.

Usually, this type of joint-partnership is called Cause Marketing. The technique refers to the collaboration between for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations for mutual benefit. It is a growing trend, as many companies have discovered that this sort of collaboration can greatly improve a corporate brand image, while the non-profit can help more people in need. Discovering new ways to become part of the community while also benefiting from new networking outlets can help any unemployed individual get back on track toward reaching their career goals.
