Mobile shopping rises in popularity

2011-12-19

The internet is a valuable resource for business owners and consumers. Many people prefer to research topics on their computers or mobile devices instead of hitting the local library and picking up a few books. However, the internet is important for more than just research. With the emergence of tablet computers, people are on the internet more than ever before, engaging with family and friends online and, of course, shopping.

This Holiday season, shoppers are taking advantage of improved mobile connectivity options and shopping at stores from the comforts of their homes. Businesses that have yet to develop mobile components for their websites are left at significant disadvantages. A recent report conducted by Equation Research for Zmags, found that 87 percent of tablet owners are shopping for merchandise on their mobile devices this Holiday season. That is quite a large percentage of consumers that unoptimized businesses will lose out on.

If trends continue like Equation Research projects and 50 percent of tablet users continue to shop from their couches, businesses should focus more energy in web development than in years past. Employing professionals to fill web development jobs and graphic design jobs will help remedy the issues, however, mobile web design is an increasingly complex field. Businesses may want to bring on tech professionals and also create HTML and CSS jobs. If organizations want to take advantage of consumer trends, they will want to take mobile web navigation as a serious and lasting preference among shoppers.

Once the Holiday season has passed, consumers will continue to use their mobile devices to locate services, businesses and products that they are interested in. In fact, 50 percent of local online searches are conducted on mobile devices, reports ClickNewz. While mobile searches will still result in the same findings as stationary devices, websites that are not compatible with smartphones or tablets may be passed over.

In order for businesses to remain relevant in such a competitive marketplace, they will need to take every step imaginable to be more visible to consumers. Mobile search and navigation is a growing trend that does not look to be stalling any time soon. Therefore, it would be an appropriate assumption for business owners that their initial investment in developing a new department to manage online search would show a quick return. Perhaps, for some businesses, creating mobile websites could be the key to growth and higher profit margins - a goal of most, if not all, business owners.
