How to create a successful business blog

2011-12-14

What business doesn't want new customers? A successful company should be continuously finding ways to attract new consumers and people of interest in order to expand its network, reputation and opportunities for growth. The real question, though, is how to effectively engage a desired target audience and communicate the benefits of a service without sounding too much like a salesperson.

There is advertising on the television, on billboards, in magazines and pop-up browsers on the internet. It is almost impossible to escape it, which is good for the companies producing it, but can feel a little invasive to consumers. Finding ways to create interactive and engaging promotional outlets that also present interesting content to consumers has proven to be one of the more effective methods of attracting new people to a company's services. That method is more commonly known as blogging.

Blogging can be a valuable networking tool for a business of any size. In a 2011 study conducted by Hubspot, the percentage of respondents with a company blog was at an all-time high of 65 percent, with 85 percent of those companies crediting their blogs with bringing in new customers thanks to the content of their posts.

Basically, the message here is that if you're a company and you do not have a blog, you are missing out big time. Blogging is a chance to let entrepreneurs, consumers, coworkers and clients get to know a company's core beliefs and offer an unprecedented amount of transparency, which in the past, used to be a scary thing.

Today, however, the key to those leads you've been craving is becoming a resource that can be related to. Understanding that a consumer is more than just a piggy bank, but someone actually looking for a solution to a problem, can help a business create a blog of interest for many people. A great place to start is by defining the audience with whom you want to have a relationship with. Then, take a different approach than your competitors and create content that is unique, witty and most importantly, engaging. Many companies often hire a social media employee, marketing specialist or even dedicated writer to make the most of their blogs.

Each post should be authentic. A successful business blog finds a voice and sticks to it. Readers will grow to enjoy your style as it'll become a signature of your blog. While remembering to be transparent, bring out your business philosophy more than you emphasize your sales strategy. Blogs are most beneficial when they can create a discussion, not when they're lined with disguised sales pitches. Get inside the consumer's head and ask for feedback. Understanding what your consumers want to read can help create better content in the future, and the added connectivity will quickly create a positive reputation for your business.
