Graphic designers are in great demand as the country climbs out of an economic crisis

2011-12-13

The job market is constantly changing, and in 2011, graphic designers are in greater need than ever before.

The country is slowly climbing out of a residual economic crisis, which opens the door for more pleasure spending. Advertising agencies and consumer-based companies will begin to boost promotional spending in hopes of enticing consumers to purchase their products. For each newly introduced product, there is a need for package design and advertising production. Graphic designers play an integral role in the creation of consumer products on the market today.

In the next seven years, there is expected to be a 13 percent increase in open graphic design positions, as businesses are becoming aware of the importance of advertising, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In today's society, consumers are constantly bombarded with promotional pieces and deals. Whether through social media, email, direct mail or telephone, companies are stepping up their advertising activities and grabbing onto any market they can get a handle on.

As a graphic designer, it is your job to help companies promote their messages in a sleek and eye-catching way. Many creations are functional art pieces, and an impressive design could act as a better ad campaign than any seen on TV or heard on the radio.

In 2008, there were 286,100 available graphic design jobs in the United States, the BLS reports. By 2018, this number is expected to increase by 36,900 positions to accommodate for the certain influx of consumer spending. For a graphic designer, these career trends mean it's an exciting time to improve on skills and steadily advance in the job world.

However, finding the right employer can be the hardest part. The market has grown so fast that there has yet to be an adequate way for designers and companies to meet face-to-face. Online job services that specialize in creative job recruiting have begun to pop up.

Creative talent agencies are helping to bridge the gap between the two and link companies with qualified designers. Through recruiters, companies are able to fill voids in their departments and continue providing successful services to their clients.

Whether on a full-time or freelance basis, talent recruitment sites or agencies are a useful source for determining which positions are available in creative fields. They are usually specialized to a local niche and are a personable tool to have when struggling to find a career path that fits your qualifications and salary needs.
