It is hard to deny that the recession that began in 2008 is still affecting the way that businesses spend money in 2011. Although, in some industries, this decline in spending has not affected the rate of employment - it may have increased it.
When the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) conducted its most recent assessment of the job market, the economy was still in full bloom. It reported that going forward, the graphic design jobs were expected to increase at the same pace as the average employment of most industries - 13 percent. However, in a more recent study conducted by Anything Research, the graphic design industry as a whole looks to rapidly surpass the BLS projection established in 2008.
It raises an interesting question: Are some creative industries recession proof? While that answer is a matter of opinion, it is irrefutable that businesses require an extensive graphic design presence on any new product or service it plans on marketing. It is simply impossible to introduce new merchandise into the market without a branding, image or campaign. Consumers recognize products based on impressions that have been formed through advertising and promotion. The way shoppers perceive products is loosely based on how a marketing team positions an item in the consumer market. Of course, it is true that businesses are trying to cut costs, but one place that proves to remain worth its time and investment is graphic design.
After taking a look at the products advertised on the television, internet, in print publications or showcased on billboards, it is apparent that a lot of thought and effort is put into creating these promotions. Factor in the extent to which most new products go to just to stand out from the competition and it is obvious that businesses value how a product is perceived. A new item that has a shoddy design won't appeal to consumers, which would render it obsolete before it hits the shelves. Even if a product is not expected to revolutionize its respective industry, its campaign would suggest otherwise.
The business world is beginning to prepare for 2012, and employment trends are being reevaluated. Individuals who want to join an industry where professional growth is possible should look to find graphic design jobs. The creative field shows no sign of slowing down, which means big salaries for those who get involved early.
