Consolidate or grow - the debate continues

2012-02-14

At the end of one year and the beginning of another, business owners have the chance to evaluate their strategies and truly measure their overall success in the past 12 months. It seems that one debate many marketers are struggling with is whether to pursue growth or consolidate and take a step back. There are advantages to both, as growth often means more money, projects and notoriety. However, scaling back projects and really focusing on the loyal clients a business has built a rapport with can prove to be just as wise.

Businesses often employ professionals who have been referenced by creative staffing services. These employees may be new to the field and are eager to make their mark in any business. Project managers need to harness these innovative minds and direct their efforts toward existing projects. Working too hard to garner new clients may be a common mistake in the workplace today.

The recent recession has caused many Americans to tighten their wallets. More importantly, it has caused consumers to think carefully about each dollar they spend. This also means focusing interest on the unique products they purchase, how they were produced and the lifespan of the goods. Corporations spending a little extra time and resources on perfecting their already established services or products often see good results.

When corporations take on new business simply to drive in revenue, they may discover down the line that they have repositioned their services in industries that they know little about. Corporations may feel so pressured by the need to grow, they take on clients simply because they are available. This can be detrimental as an online marketing agency may not be as successful at print or broadcast marketing. Failing clients due to a lack of knowledge can seriously hurt the reputation of any organization.

While earning more money is tempting, and often necessary, businesses may want to focus more closely on their current clients. Developing further relationships could result in more projects as the level of trust and experience has been established and tested in the past. When clients experience an influx of available spending, they are more likely to boost their relationships and projects with the organizations that have dedicated numerous hours to their cause. Consolidation may seem like a negative term in the business world, but it could be the key to future success and longevity in 2012. Outlasting the competition can be just as positive as surpassing them in the marketplace.
